Project objective
Main project objective
Verify the functionality of the proposed standards and procedures to define a concept for a comprehensive framework for calculating the carbon footprint in the agri‑food sector, and integrate it into public procurement processes to improve the sector’s sustainability.
By collecting data on the carbon footprint of specific agri‑food enterprises and products, we will identify the most critical areas and propose solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of agri‑food companies.
Our goal is to design a methodology that is sufficiently accurate in critical, carbon‑intensive categories, yet simple enough for small and medium‑sized enterprises to apply these standards and procedures without difficulty in the future.
By collaborating with public procurement specialists and embedding carbon criteria into public procurement processes, the project aims to create space for responsible decision‑making in procurement and to encourage environmentally responsible behavior by companies.
Specific objectives
1.
Expand the knowledge base and better understand greenhouse gas emissions across product lines in the agri‑food sector.
2.
Identify the main sources and processes generating greenhouse gases within the sector’s product lines.
3.
Propose measures to manage and reduce the carbon footprint at the level of individual companies and the sector as a whole.
4.
Create an open catalogue of agri‑products and their carbon footprints, which can be used in the future for additional purposes—for example, to support green public procurement by favoring low‑carbon and domestic products.
5.
Develop a concept of standards and proposed procedures for implementing carbon footprinting in public procurement processes.
6.
Disseminate new knowledge and experimentally validated procedures through training, workshops, and public presentations.
